Me, My Daughter, and the Motel — Chapter I: A Dark and Stormy Night
Introduction:
When a snowstorm blankets the highways and halts traffic, Mitchell and his daughter take refuge in a motel to wait it out until daybreak. As the snow gets deeper, their desires get darker and begin to run amok.
Snow covered the road., camouflaging it in with the rest of the landscape. Fortunately, the shadows my headlamps cast in the ditches gave me at least some indication of where the edge of the road was. That, and this road was anything but unfamiliar. I’d driven it many times. Hell, in good weather I could probably almost do it blindfolded, I’d driven it so much the past several years.
There was a good set of winter tires underneath me, so that upped my advantage some. Still, one false move, or one misjudgment about where the centre of the road was, and I would end up in disaster. I persevered, though. I’d promised my daughter that, rain or shine, I’d come pick her up every other weekend. I wasn’t about to lose out on time with my daughter over a few glistening flakes.
Since I’d divorced her mother, I’d always been diligent on making the journey every two weeks. Honestly, I didn’t actually have to anymore. Sophie was an adult, having turned eighteen a few month ago. She could come and go as she pleased and there was no such thing as visitation rights anymore. But, we still kept up the habit since she was still in high school and living with her mother. It seemed like pittance, really – Sophie would only spend three days out of fourteen with me – so I made the most of it. She always expected me around the same time, but tonight I warned her I’d probably be a little late.
As it was, I only felt comfortable doing 40 or 50mph on the highway. The great Northwest was notorious for bad weather, but this severe system that Canada had sent our way wasn’t going down without a fight. So, deal I must.
I was already forty-five minutes late when I crested the hill and looked over at the town she had moved to with her mother. It usually only took ten minutes to get there from this point, but tonight was anyone’s guess. I let out a sigh of relief, glad to see the streetlamps, even if still a long ways off. A moment later, my cell phone started to ring. I looked down and saw it was my daughter calling. Reaching down to its perch in the cup holder, I half-blindly turned it on, setting it to speaker.
“Hey, Angel!” I answered, using the pet name I’ve had for her since she was a child.
Sophie’s voice flooded the otherwise silent car. “Hi, Daddy!” she replied. “Are you still on your way?”
“Yeah, I am,” I let her know. “I’m looking at town now.”
There was a slight pause. Her voice filled with astonishment. “Really? It’s so bad out there! I’m almost surprised you made it.”
“I wouldn’t miss a weekend with you for anything, Sophie,” I reassured her. “Not even a bit of snow.”
She scoffed. “A bit of snow? Dad, it’s a blizzard. A bad one, too!”
“It’s all good, Angel.”
We chatted briefly for another moment before I excused myself so that I could watch the road. Another fifteen minutes and pulled up in front of her mother’s house. Bracing myself for the blast of frosty air, I booked it toward the back door. Sophie was already there waiting for me as I brushed the snow from my clothes.
“Hi, Daddy!” she cheered, embracing me, not caring about the residual snowflakes adorning my jacket. “Glad you made it! How were the roads?”
“Awful,” I admitted frankly. “But, if you take them nice and slow, they’re doable. I just can’t believe the snow plows aren’t out yet.”
“About time you got here, Mitchell,” chimed in a voice from around the corner. I knew all too well whom it belonged to. Sophie’s mother entered the kitchen. “Not exactly your best time.”
I grimaced, breathing deeply to control my responses. If there was one thing I hated above almost all others, it was getting into it with my ex in front of my daughter. That wasn’t something I wanted her to see. She had seen enough of it when the two of us were still together. It was a calculated tactic, too. Sophie already didn’t get along well with her mother. Seeing her mother’s vindictive attitude toward me without a reaction on my end helped to solidify that animosity. Sophie could clearly see that I was trying to be the bigger person – although, I admit, perhaps my motives weren’t entirely admirable.
With concerted effort, I answered calmly, “Well…in case you haven’t noticed, there is a crap-ton of snow out there tonight.”
“And that’s an excuse how?” she shot back. “You’d think you would maybe left earlier so you could arrive on time.”
I really didn’t see how the woman didn’t realize just how “Yes, that would have been ideal. Unfortunately, I do have work responsibilities that I need to fulfill, and couldn’t get away early enough to make a difference.” “I’m here now, though.” I turned to Sophie before her mother could come up with some other smart remark. “Ready, Angel?”
She gestured to her suitcase in return. “All set!” Sophie turned and grabbed her coat and put on a pair of boots as I picked up her luggage. I caught her mother’s eyes and bid her farewell. She in turn only stood there with her arms folded. “We’ll see you Sunday evening,” I mentioned as I walked out the door.
Sophie said her goodbyes as well and a moment later we were out at the car. “Wow, there’s a lot of snow out here! It doesn’t look like this much inside,” she commented.
“Yeah, and the little bit of wind makes it all the worse to drive in,” I observed, feeling the strong breeze wash over my face. “It’s just below the freezing point, too, so it melts as soon as it hits the road, then freezes, making it icy and slippery.”
“I’m glad you’re the one driving,” Sophie laughed.
I chuckled in response, and put her bag in the back seat. We took our places in the front and we were off. As we left, I took one last glance at the house. My ex stood there in the living room window – sure enough, with her arms still folded defensively.
Before long, we were out on the highway again. In the thirty minutes between arriving on this stretch of road and now travelling on it in the opposite direction, it seemed to have gotten twice as bad. Snow stuck to every square inch, and I slowed down even more than I had on my initial journey. Sophie plugged in her iPod, and started off playing some music for us to enjoy as we drove. The musical distraction provided me some relief and I relaxed, even lessening my grip on the wheel.
“So, how’s school?” I asked my daughter. “Your senior year turning out to be everything you hoped it would be?”
“It’s ok,” she answered. “I hate English, but that’s nothing new.”
I raised an eyebrow, daring to take my eyes off the road and look in her direction. “But you do so well at it!” I insisted.
“Doesn’t mean I like it,” Sophie laughed. “It just means I’m really good at BSing my way through essays and making it sound coherent.”
I laughed. That pretty much sounded like any English class that I’d ever taken. “Partying hard?” I pressed.
She shot me a disbelieving look. “I can’t believe you’re actually encouraging that.”
“As long as you don’t party too hard, I see no problem with it,” I jokingly advised. “You’re an adult now. There’s not much I can do to discipline you if you want to explore your more adventurous side.”
I’d come to grips with my daughter turning 18. It was just one of those things. She was my only child, and I’d probably always be the protective father, but now it was time to let her spread her wings. Even I had to admit that my daughter was a beautiful girl. She was slender, wavy blonde hair, light brown eyes. I’d come to realize more and more every time I saw her that the time I was afraid for was at hand; suitors would be lining up to come knocking and I had to be ok with that – as long as they weren’t knocking her up.
Sophie muttered an agreeing response. “They’re ok, too. I don’t go out much,” she confessed. “I’ve got a lot of dancing rehearsals with the show coming up in a couple months.”
“Right! That makes sense.” We settled into a conversation about her exploits in dance while the snow danced and blew past us outside.
The night was dark. Hardly a vehicle was seen on the road. That was unusual, since this was a relatively well-travelled highway. Then again, this storm was sure to ground a number of travellers, whatever their business. The thought had begun to settle into my mind, too, but where to stop for the night was another question.
A chime rung out. Sophie dug into her purse and pulled out her phone. Opening the message, she announced, “It’s from Mom.” My focus was narrowed on the road, but I kept my ear open for any new information. My daughter made a slight growl. “She sent a link to a travel advisory. The police want people to stay off the road tonight and only travel if they have to.”
“Why doesn’t that surprise me?” I mumbled, though Sophie still heard me. She grimaced a smile sympathetically. “Do you think we should stop? We’re only an hour from home.”
“Mom’s worried.”
With a slight tone of sarcasm, I answered, “That doesn’t surprise me, either.”
“Dad,” she chided me gently.
“Well…it doesn’t,” I confirmed. I took a breath and sighed. “But…I’ve kind of been thinking about it. It’s really getting bad out here. The fastest I’ve been going is forty.”
Sophie sighed quietly. “So we’re more than an hour away.”
“Yeah, I guess,” I huffed softly. I’d been thinking in terms of just miles. My daughter was right. It was certainly going to take longer at this rate. “Maybe more like an hour and a half or two if this crap keeps up.”
“Yeah, I don’t think it’s letting up any time soon. At least that’s what this weather report says,” she relayed, scrolling through her phone again. “Apparently the plows are out, but this highway isn’t the highest on their list. But they say it’ll probably be done by morning.”
I nodded. The thought of stopping for the night when we could conceivably make it wasn’t appealing, but whenever I’d let my pride rule my life before, it didn’t always turn out well. “Yeah, we should stop,” I surrendered. I looked over. My daughter’s face seemed to relax a little and an appreciative smile spread across her lips. I could tell she was just as uncomfortable being a passenger on these roads as I was being a driver. “We’ll see what’s in the next town, ok?”
“Ok,” she agreed.
Another few miles and a small farming town came into view. It was a place I usually just zoomed past without a second thought. I knew there was a small roadside cafe, but that was it. The place didn’t even have a gas station that I knew of. I was about to drive on to the next town when Sophie noticed a motel just up one of the roads. I thought it was a relatively inconvenient spot, or at least not particularly ideal for getting business, but I was just glad she’d seen it.
We pulled up to the office. I got out and faced the weather. It was getting noticeably worse. There was more snow, more wind, and the temperature was dropping. I ran inside, the bells on the door chiming my arrival. The office was at least well-kept, so that was encouraging.
A slender, middle-aged man soon walked up from the living quarters behind. “Good evening, sir!” he greeted me. “Ducking out of the storm, too, are you?”
I laughed. “Yeah, what was your first clue?”
He smirked in reply and started getting out the necessary items for “It’s pretty bad out there,” he chuckled. I was just reading the weather report and it doesn’t surprise me that we’ve pretty much got a full house tonight.”
“Yeah,” I chuckled. “I was going to try and make it, but it’s just not letting up. Guess I’m not the only one with the same idea.”
“Mm-hm… In fact…with you, it is a full house,” he frowned, looking over his system. “Looks like I’ve only got one more room available.”
“Well, as long as it’s warm, I’ll take it,” I chuckled again.
“Sounds good,” he laughed lightly. “Can I get your name?”
“Mitchell,” I told him.
“Alright,” he said, recording the information on the computer. “It’s got one queen bed, and as for being warm, it’s adequate, but the thermostat doesn’t work well in that room. The part came in the other day, but I haven’t had a chance to replace it yet. You can crank it as high as you want, but it only keeps the room about 60 or 65, 70 if it’s having a good day. That’s why it’s our room of last resort.”
I considered it for a moment, but realized I didn’t have much of a choice. My hesitation must have been plainly visible. The owner lowered his face a bit.
“Will that be ok? I’ve discounted the room because of it.”
One other detail suddenly struck me. “Only one queen, you said?”
“Yes, that’s right,” he nodded.
I scowled a bit. “No other place in town, huh?”
He shook his head. “No. Sorry, sir. The closest places are thirty-five miles east, or twenty-five if you’re going west.”
“Yeah, we just came from the west,” I grumbled. Options were severely limited, and I knew that Sophie wouldn’t want to travel any more tonight if we could help it. In the end, I relented. “Alright, one queen it is.”
“I take it there are two of you?”
“Yeah.”
He nodded thoughtfully. “Alright, well for the inconvenience of both the heater and the bed, I’ll take it down a bit more. How’s that?”
I agreed. We struck a very reasonable price, and I paid and received the key before returning to the car. My daughter was playing and tapping away on her phone when I opened the door and sat down. “Well…we’ve got a room.” She looked at me skeptically, noting the unsteadiness of my voice. “Couple things, though. First, there’s only one bed. Second, the heater works, but not well.”
“Well, it’s going to be better than sleeping out there,” she insisted, pointing out the window. I chuckled an agreement and pulled up in front of our room. Carrying Sophie’s luggage inside, my daughter followed me into our small abode for the night just as the ‘no’ light up on the motel sign to indicate all the rooms were booked.
Inside, it was clean and comfortable. It wasn’t a five-star hotel, to be sure, but the room was certainly far from dingy or run-down. It had the amenities that were necessary: a TV, the broken heater, a small kitchenette in the back corner beside the bathroom, and there, in the centre of the room, was the queen bed.
I put the suitcase down on the floor beside it. “Well, let’s make ourselves at home, I guess,” I said, closing the door and taking off my shoes, then turning on the heater for all it was worth.
Sophie joined me. Moments later, she took her toiletries bag and some comfier clothes into the bathroom. I sat on the bed and turned on the TV. Beside me, in my daughter’s purse, her phone chimed again. I raised an eyebrow and looked toward the bathroom door. She was in there, doing whatever, so I decided to be the nosy dad and check what was happening in the device.
I soon met with disappointment. I shouldn’t have been surprised. The phone was locked with a password, but the home screed showed that her friend, Grace, had texted. They’d been friends since childhood, and had both been devastated when Sophie went to live with her mother over a hundred miles away.
Every weekend I had my daughter, the pair usually did something together. Often, it was for almost the entire weekend as they regularly had sleepovers. Try as I might to spend time with her as her father, over the years, more and more of Sophie’s time was spent with Grace. I tried hard not to be too jealous. I realized friends were also important – though, at times, it did seem like my daughter was slipping away. It looked like another weekend where I might not see Sophie as much as I was hoping.
I slipped Sophie’s phone back into her purse and closed it. A few minutes later, Sophie walked out, ready for bed. She wore a pair of pyjama pants, complimented with a shirt she’d had for about five or six years – and looked about just as many sizes too small. A considerable ring of midriff peeked out from between my daughter’s pants and shirt, showing a few inches of her strong, tight tummy. I swear, I could have bounced a quarter off her abs if she were lying down.
It was the gripping nature of her white shirt that really got me, though. Her full, C-sized teenage breasts were as good as exposed. It was unmistakably evident that she wasn’t wearing a bra underneath. They bounced as she walked with that slight jiggle that only a youthful body can produce. Cleavage smiled above her neck line, an inviting chasm for my eyes to get lost in. Her nipples, sensitive to the cool air in the room, were poking straight through the fabric.
For whatever reason, I found myself caught up, staring at Sophie’s provocative skin and accentuated breasts. She had a delicious figure, one that every guy hopes to have as a conquest. Then, I realized what I was doing, and gave my head a shake and looked away before she noticed. Sitting up, I announced that I was going to get ready for bed myself. “Can I borrow your toothpaste, Angel?” I asked her.
She looked at me with a puzzled expression. “Do you have a toothbrush?”
“No, but I’m just going to gargle a little with water like mouthwash,” I explained, and she congenially agreed.
In the bathroom, I gave myself a long, hard look. I stared deeply into my own eyes, wondering just what the hell had possessed me to look at my daughter with lustful eyes like that exactly. She was a beautiful girl. This I knew. But, she was also my daughter. Maturing though she was, this was the most illicit thought I’d ever had about her. I certainly didn’t want any more.
I shook my head again, attributing my brief lack of self-control to not having had a woman with me for over two years now. I’d been divorced nearly eight, and I’d had a few relationships, but nothing recent. My work was my life, and often took over it. That was another reason I looked forward to these weekends: I scheduled nothing job-related on them so that I could actually relax and enjoy the time with my daughter, giving her my full attention.
I quickly got ready for bed and walked out the door. Sophie was already comfortable in the bed, slid over to one side. I smiled. “You can have the bed, Angel,” I permitted. This had actually been my plan all along. Now, with the lustful thought from seeing her midriff still burning in my head, I wanted to keep away from her. If we were in close proximity, there was no telling what other temptations might infiltrate and take root.
Sophie frowned. “Are you sure, Daddy?” she inquired directly. “There’s lots of room for both of us.”
“Yeah,” I answered quickly, walking to the closet. Fortunately, there were some extra blankets and I pulled out a couple for myself. “I’ll just sleep on the floor. I’ll be alright.”
My daughter shrugged as I set up an area to sleep on. “I tried turning up the heat all the way,” she announced, “but it’s still just blowing cold air.”
“Yeah, the guy said that’s what happens,” I confirmed while arranging the blankets to give me a little cushion on the floor. “He said he has the part to fix it, just hasn’t done it yet.”
“Oh.”
With nothing more to really do, we decided that it was best to get some sleep so we could set out early in the morning. I shut off the TV. Sophie took care of the lights and curled up in her blankets. She was looking at me in the dark room, and I felt a little self-conscious since I needed to undress a little.
“Turn around,” I admonished her gently. “I need to get ready for bed, too, and I don’t have something to really sleep in like you do.”
“Oh, right,” she giggled, rolling over. “Sorry, Dad. I won’t look.”
I removed my pants, socks and shirt, reducing myself to only my undershirt and boxers, and laid down on the floor. It wasn’t the most comfortable location I’d ever slept in – I didn’t think this carpet even had underlay beneath it – but I made do.
“Goodnight, Dad,” came Sophie’s voice from over the bed.
“Goodnight, Angel,” I answered her.
After what seemed like forever, my thoughts had just begun to drift away when Sophie’s voice interrupted my rest. “Daddy?” she asked quietly. “Are you still awake?”
I snorted a little as I drew in a breath to reply. “Barely,” I answered.
“Sorry,” she giggled softly. “I was just wondering…are you really ok there on the floor?”
I opened up my eyes. My daughter was staring at me over the edge of the bed. Her curly, blonde hair fell like an inviting canopy of vines from overhead. I couldn’t quite see her eyes in the darkness, but from what I could make out, I knew they were looking at me imploringly. I had no doubt that she wore that pouty smile that she always did when she was trying to butter me up before asking for something.
“It’s alright. It’ll be ok for the night,” I confirmed, slowly shutting my eyes again.
“Because I’m kinda cold.”
My eyes darted open again. I looked up at her. “Do you want me to get you another blanket?”
“No…” she whispered.
In my chest, my heart skipped a beat, and made up for it with the next one. I swear the thud was loud enough to be heard in the next room. “Do you want me to tinker with the heater to see if I can get it to work?”
“No…” she whispered again.
I was stuck. I figured I knew what she wanted, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it – least of all without hearing it explicitly from her mouth. I wasn’t going to assume. Plus, I was certainly dressed compromisingly. Combine that with the thoughts that had permeated my head earlier, and I knew that it had a potential to be a paternal disaster.
Nevertheless, the primal beast inside me began to growl. I knew exactly what it wanted, and I had to keep it chained and locked away.
“Can you come cuddle me, Daddy? At least until I fall asleep?” Sophie pleaded sweetly.
Now, it was smiling mockingly at me.
“Sophie…” I tried to deter her, desperate to deter her. “I’m in only my underwear, Angel. That’s not exactly appropriate.”
She took a second to respond. “I know, but it’s just this one night. And it’s cold,” she reasoned. “We can make an exception. Right?”
“I…” I could feel my resistance slipping away. “I guess…”
I could see her smile, even in the black room. She pulled away from the edge, as if inviting me into the bed with her. I sat up, rubbing my face, admonishing myself to keep level-headed and calm. This was only to keep her warm. She wasn’t some woman that I was trying to woo. My desires had to be kept in check.
And yet, I wondered if my manly instincts would obey.
Climbing beneath the covers, I slid up beside my daughter. Sophie was facing the window, so I fitted myself behind her, becoming the big spoon. She lifted her head so that I could get one arm beneath her neck, and I brought my hand to her shoulder. My other arm wrapped around her abdomen. I could feel her skin. Her shirt seemed to rise higher than when I’d seen it. I squeezed my eyes, fighting hard to avoid any unbecoming thoughts from bubbling to the surface.
With a deep breath, I hugged my daughter against my chest. She relaxed, holding my arm around her shoulders. I knew she was smiling. Despite it being my daughter, and knowing that I probably shouldn’t be enjoying this, it honestly felt good to have a woman’s softness in my arms again.
“Mm…you’re so warm, Daddy,” she murmured gratefully. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, Angel,” I answered with trepidation. “Just…don’t tell anyone about this, ok?”
“I won’t,” she agreed quietly.
I cleared my throat a bit. “As far as anyone else knows, I slept on the floor,” I insisted. “Ok?”
My daughter turned her head to look at me. Damn, she was beautiful – and here in my arms! I felt a warm rush flood my veins. I knew where my physical senses were heading. I mentally cut them off, thwarting anything more.
Sophie studied me. “What are you afraid of, Dad?” she asked.
I grinned lopsidedly. “Some people would question whether it’s…proper.”
Her shoulders fell. She returned my expression with a similar one. “I know.”
“That’s what I’m afraid of.”
“I know.”
I rested my forehead on the side of her head. “Let’s just go to sleep, ok?” I quietly suggested in her ear.
Sophie nestled into my arms a bit more snugly. “Ok, Daddy…”
My emotions were smouldering. Like a pile of embers, the coals of lust burned deeply within, threatening to burst into flames should any more fuel be added. For the moment, I had my desire locked down. I could contain it. As long as nothing more happened, I could maintain control.
For a long time, we laid there together – father and daughter, probably far closer physically than advisable. I was just beginning to think I could relax, fall asleep, forget about this compromising moment and never mention it again, when Sophie moved. She adjusted her legs, pushing her perfect, succulent little bum against my groin.
That did it.
My eyes shot open. Blood surged into my manly digit, filling it, growing it to its full seven inches. There was no stopping things now. My erection grew involuntarily, no matter how much I tried to force down the urge to mate. My breathing was shaky as I looked at my daughter resting comfortably beside me. I could only hope and pray that she was sound asleep.
Then she took a deep breath. A smile crept across her face as she turned her head in my direction. “Dad…” she giggled quietly, “…what’s that?”
Feigning ignorance, I answered, “What’s what?”
She pushed her round, teenage butt against me again. There was no way she didn’t feel the hardness between my legs. I knew I was caught.
“That,” she identified.
“Um…” I choked softly, trying to come up with an excuse. I failed. “I’m…I’m sorry, Angel.”
Slowly, Sophie turned over to look at me in the eye. She was still smirking. “Is that because of me?”
“No, it’s because of me,” I grumbled in frustration.
Sophie raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
“I…I haven’t been with a woman in over two years, Sophie. It’s kind of taking its toll,” I admitted. “And then…when you invited me into bed…” I stuttered, looking desperately for an exit. “Damn it, I was worried about this happening. Sophie, I’m sorry…I’m so sorry…”
I started to pull away, but my daughter wasn’t having it. She grabbed my body and moved right along with me, not letting me escape. I stopped struggling, trying to figure out why exactly she would persist.
“It’s ok, Dad,” she insisted. “It’s natural, right?”
Her words caught me by surprise. “Yeah, I…” I scrambled for words, “I…guess so. But you’re my daughter, Angel,” I fought back. “It’s not right for me to think about you that way.”
“Maybe.”
I lowered my eyes at her. “It’s not, Sophie,” I scolded tenderly.
“Maybe…” she repeated.
We laid there for a moment, just looking at each other. I knew she wasn’t done. There was more behind those tender, brown eyes of hers. I readied myself for whatever onslaught she could contrive next.
“Why haven’t you been dating?”
I have to admit, that one caught me a little off guard, too. “I…I don’t know,” I tried to parry. “I work a lot. I’m also 48, Angel. I kinda think my dating days are past. I guess…I guess I just don’t see myself as an attractive enough man anymore.”
“Are you kidding me?” she half shrieked. “Dad, you’re totally a handsome guy! My friends bug me all the time. You’re over six feet, right?”
“Yeah. 6’2”.” I confirmed, taking a breath, readying myself to strike back. “But…seriously, this husky body? I weigh 240, Angel. That’s not exactly fit.”
“But you carry it so well! You’re a strong and built man. You have just the right amount of hair on you. Do you know how many girls love the dad bod look?” she attacked mercilessly. I opened my mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Her next words hit me hard. “I’m one of them.”
I’d heard of women enjoying that kind of figure on a man, but I could scarcely believe it – until now. My own daughter thought I was an attractive man? That had to count for something, as long as she wasn’t just putting me on.
Sophie took her hand off my chest. Suddenly, under the covers, I felt her shirt disappearing under my fingers. More and more of her skin fell prey to my touch as she tugged her shirt up her body. My hand felt like lead, too heavy to move away. It was stuck there. When my whole hand was on her bare side, she brought the shirt back down, over my hand, housing it inside her clothing.
“You can touch me, Dad,” she promised. “You need it. I understand. I’m ok with it.”
“Sophie…” I gasped breathlessly, hardly daring to believe that my own daughter was offering herself to me. “I shouldn’t, Angel… It’s not right…”
“I want you to.”
Her hand came back, touched my chest, then followed my body down to my crotch. Her fingernails scurried gracefully over my underwear, dancing on my thick manhood inside. I shivered and closed my eyes as first her fingers, then her palm slid rhythmically up and down the length of my shaft. Her touch was divine.
